RAVEN, NOT A CROW
(contributed by Mary Lowery)

They say I crow.
But I’m not a crow, I’m a raven…..

Raven―
Single
Mysterious
Almost silent.

Crows―
Failed ravens.
Black.
Raucous in quarrels.
Clamourous for ascendancy
Rag-tags in twigs and boughs
They tangle in their caw-cuss rows
In knots too hard to untie.

Raven—
Shape shifter in
its baby steps— a totter-teetering,
its head-nods to wavering grass—
a prince in practice, its tail-bats—
a regal slap to the air; now
rushing the vulture devouring the lamb,
darting at wild dogs
destroying the deer,
for fresh doe-flesh,
or meat for a meal
—a lunch-bagger.

Raven—
Rex
one perched bird sovereign over
a four-and-twenty caucus crowing in flattering imitation
of ‘wha-chewills’,
‘evermores’

Raven—
Black mystery
self-heralding in woodland pipes,
Or in ancient proclamation,
“Kroark, kroark, kroark!”
